Today I viewed the much anticipated premiere trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, My first impression was this actually might be worth watching. The movie seems to carry on from where the first movie ended, which in my opinion is good to see that they didn’t just start an entire new story line from scratch.  Cobra (Joseph Gordon-Levitt),  Destro (Christopher Eccleston) and the Baroness (Sienna Miller) are still in prison, Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) has replaced the U.S. President,  Duke (Channing Tatum) is from what I’m guessing, leading the Joes along side Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) and Snake Eyes (Ray Park) has a student named Jinx ( Elodie Yung) whom he is training in the art of Ninjitsu. It appears early in the trailer that Zartan has used his power while assuming the role of the U.S. President, to attack the Joes obviously in an attempt of ‘Retaliation’. Only a few of the Joes survived and attempt to face off against Zartan and his allies.

I am happy to see the use of characters from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and adding some new ones to the team such as Lady Jaye, Flint and Havoc amongst others. I was also happy to read the cast list and see the names of some very strong actors such as Bruce Willis (a must for any hard hitting action movie) and Ray Stevenson who has been in several comic book movies such as Punisher: Warzone and Thor. Of course one of the highlighted stars of the film is Dwayne Johnson (definitely not playing a Tooth Fairy in this film) who’s most recent action movie role was in Fast Five, and once again he’s taking up the role of a gun toting bad ass. With the induction of new actors there is the absence of others from the casting list, most notably Joseph Gordon Levitt, Christopher Eccleston, Dennis Quaid, and Shorty…I mean Marlon Wayans, and what? No Brendan Fraser?  Why they aren’t in this film, who knows, perhaps the new director (Jon M. Chu) and writers ( Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick) didn’t think it was necessary to have them in this film, which leaves room to believe that there might be a third installment and that’s when they’ll be bringing them back.

I was curious about a couple things I noticed; what’s Storm Shadow doing in the next film? Wasn’t he killed in the fight with Snake Eyes? And is there going to be a different actor playing Cobra Commander? I ask this because you can obviously see a quick scene of him standing next to Zartan and Firefly, yet he’s not listed on the current casting list. I’m sure you all have the same questions if not more regarding this movie, and since it’s not going to be in theatres until June 29th 2012 the rumor mill and message boards will be working over time. Lastly, I do hope that the Studio and director did a better job on this film then they did on the last one, with a Box Office gross of around $150 million ($25 mil. Less than the estimated budget), crappy dialogue and over the top cheesy graphics they have a lot of work ahead of them to win the hearts and minds of the movie viewers.
