Tom Cruise as Maverick

Entering the danger zone…again? Yes, I definitely think that is a possibility. According to an interview that MTV News did with Tom Cruise in Dubai, he stated that he is in talks with Top Gun director Tony Scott (The A-Team) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI: Series).  When asked more about the possibility or doing another Top Gun movie, Tom Cruise said;

Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas and I thought, wow, that would be what we could do now. We all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot.”

 Of course when Cruise was asked about what role he would be playing, he said he didn’t know. WHAT?? Come on Tom you know if you were in that movie you would have to be Maverick, anything else and you would lose a lot of fans and following.

The plot of Top Gun 2 is yet unknown, but rumors have been floating around saying that it would focus on a new generation of pilots that would possibly be mentored by Cruises character Maverick. As I read this article a couple of things came to my mind; 1) Is Val Kilmer coming back? Because I don’t think his large “self” would be able to fit in ANY plane cockpit…Well except maybe a C-117. 2) Would the new movie have the same feeling without Goose? And lastly would Kenny Loggins be making a return? Personally I don’t think Top Gun would be the same without his “awesome” music.

Top Gun was a huge hit back in 1986, but I’m not sure how well it will do 25 years later. Yes, with the changes in computer animation and graphics in today’s cinema they could do a lot more with air combat scenes and there are a lot of upcoming and young actors that could pull off the part of a Naval fighter pilot; Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Hayden Christenson (Jumpers), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) and maybe even Orlando Bloom (The Three Musketeers). With the constant unending flow of romance, teeny bopper, horror, action and suspense films I don’t know if it will be as popular now as it was in the 80’s. Either way I am excited and hesitant to see what they’ll do with story, and I pray it doesn’t fall to the 3-D craze.
